Originally known as Lake Park, Spanaway was platted out by the Lake Park Land, Railway and Improvement Company in 1890 as the terminus of its rail line. The community boomed as a resort town and today you’ll still find several extant examples of historic Spanaway real estate dating back to this first period of growth.

Fort Lewis, with its population of approximately 20,000, is a CDP in itself. Over 25,000 military and civilian personnel are employed in the post, which is the home of the U.S. I Corps.
